Brendan's character was well on his way trying to change his life. A life that everyone has experienced in one-way or another at one point in his or her lives.
However, with every "perfect" wish there is always a catch (after all you are dealing with the devil) and that makes the comedy even funnier.
The theme is the same he wants what he wants and every time he thinks he's got the perfect wish down something changes it in a direction he never wanted it to go.
This movie proves it's the journey and not the destination that makes a person who they are and the shortcuts along the way are just not worth it because your bound to have missed something worth wild.
